Why Your Logo Doesn't Need to be so Literal

Article title and example of a literal logo design and unique logo design

In the world of branding, there's a common misconception that a logo must directly represent what a company does. However, highly successful brand developers understand the power of abstract logos and how they can transcend literal representations to communicate deeper meanings. Here's why your logo doesn't need to be a literal representation of your company:

1. Communicating Beyond Words

Abstract logos have the unique ability to communicate a brand's essence, values, and personality without relying on literal depictions. As Wong Digital states, "Many people think that a logo should represent what the company does. However, a logo is more than just a symbol. It's the embodiment of the brand's identity and values". A logo should evoke emotions and create connections with your audience, going beyond the constraints of words.

2. Capturing Attention and Intrigue

Abstract logos possess an element of mystery and intrigue that can captivate audiences and leave a lasting impression. SpellBrand emphasizes, "An abstract logo is a logo design that communicates its message through an abstract design that takes effort to understand and decipher". By sparking curiosity and inviting interpretation, abstract logos invite viewers to engage with the brand on a deeper level.

3. Encouraging Creativity and Flexibility

By freeing your logo from literal constraints, you open up endless possibilities for creativity and adaptability. Logo Design Love explains, "Just because it's relevant, doesn't mean you can't do better using a design that doesn't depict the product or service your client provides". Abstract logos allow for versatility across various platforms and contexts, ensuring your brand remains fresh and relevant.

Famous Brand Icon Examples

Abstract brand icons are powerful symbols that represent the essence and identity of a company, often transcending language barriers to communicate with consumers on a global scale. Mastercard's interlocking circles, colored in red and yellow, symbolize unity and partnership, reflecting the company's commitment to connectivity and financial transactions. Nike's iconic swoosh, a simple yet dynamic checkmark, embodies movement, speed, and victory, aligning perfectly with the brand's ethos of athletic excellence and empowerment. Starbucks' green, twin-tailed mermaid, known as the Siren, evokes a sense of enchantment and allure, drawing customers into the coffeehouse experience with its maritime mythology and distinctive aesthetic. Adidas's brand icon, featuring three ascending slanted bars, represents dynamism, progress, and forward movement in the realm of sportswear and athletic performance. These abstract brand icons serve as visual anchors, instantly recognizable symbols that evoke emotions, memories, and associations with their respective companies.

Implementing The Brief

Brand Icon

Incorporating the essence of "Sublime," I aimed to convey the joy of satisfied customers through a smile symbolized by the letter "u." This addition highlights their dedication to customer satisfaction. Moreover, the depiction of two individuals shaking hands emphasizes their commitment to fostering strong relationships with customers.

I chose a Sans-serif font as my base to convey a modern aesthetic through it’s sleek lines and minimal ornamentation. By subtly angling the tops of of the b, l, and i, it enhances the font's modern and distinctive appeal. The rounded, lowercase font crafted for Sublime, coupled with the playful brand icon, imbues it with an inviting charm that appeals to both men and women.
